I am headed up to San Fransisco tonight (well tomorrow, publishing this tomorrow) where I will join 7 of my 8 close friends that live up there. I will only be gone about 4 days and it doesn’t make much sense to bring a WHOLE suitcase to cart around. So, I made a really big decision to NOT take my laptop with me and it already pains me to think about it. Having your own computer to crawl into bed at night, while on vacation, always makes wherever you are seem like home. You have you OS color scheme, your bookmarks, your playlist, all your email filters right there… just like home. However, with the advent of smaller wi-fi ready devices, it begs the question if it is worth a whole laptop taking up space and weight in your bag when in it’s place you can fit more shoes.
Shoes are important in this instance of LAX-SFO travel (well, when are shoes NOT important?). Whenever I travel to San Francisco, I always end up buying new shoes. Such as this pair, this pair, and this pair. I’m all for utilitarian packing in a very geek sense and figuring out one pair of jeans that will match three tops and one pair of shoes for all four days I’m there, but this makes my growing inner girly girl cry. Hence, the cutting of the laptop-umbicord in the name of shoes.
What devices allowed for this transition? I would say iPhone, but I don’t have one yet. So I bring with me my Nokia e70 (does wi-fi and mapping w/ GPS), my $100 Woot.com Nokia 770 Internet tablet (better to curl up with on your pillow and quickly check your 3 most important email accounts), and my Nintendo DS. While I don’t have the cloud add-on (refer to tomorrow’s post on new vocab… tomorrow), it provides for some decent gaming while I am away from WoW. Along with me on this trip I will be lvl’ing my Druid on PuzzleQuest (this doped up Bejeweled is proving to need more strategy that I anticipated), Zelda: A Link to the Past, and good ole Tetris.
You too can make room for more shoes if you switch over to a new fancy wi-fi device… and let the device lead you to more shoes. Heaven.

Yeah, I’m thinking four days—there’s no way I’m not bringing my laptop.
You gotta remember, we’re women, everyone expects to have more than one piece of luggage. I always carryon the laptop and check a small suitcase. Still leaves plenty of room for shoes!

Hm, touche on the being a woman part. However, I learned my lesson as my friend’s wi-fi apparently decided to die right before I got there and I could only connect via ethernet and HIS laptop.
Next time… I did bring my 4 pairs of shoes though :)
